The Measurement and Importance of Cotton Fiber Friction

R.M. Broughton, Jr. and Y.E. El Mogahzy

ABSTRACT

The difficulties of measuring and interpreting friction phenomena in the realm of fibers is well understood. In the absence of adequate measurement techniques, the understanding of fiber friction is limited and its importance in textile processing has not been well documented. several situations have come to the authors' attention over the last several years which highlight the critical importance of interfiber friction, and have prompted a renewed effort to devise a more satisfactory test procedure. This report describes some situations in which fiber friction is critical and a testing procedure which shows some promise in making useful measurements of interfiber friction.
