Analysis of the Biological Effects of Standard West Texas Cotton Dust

S.K. Ainsworth, T.G. Mundie and P.A. Pilia

ABSTRACT

A standard dust, prepared and distributed by Cotton Incorporated, was evaluated for biological activity using different in vitro bioassays. The dust was shown to possess chemotactic activity, to cause the release of histamine, to contain 5-hydroxytryptamine and to cause the release of thromboxane. These studies demonstrate that the dust has sufficient biological activity to serve as a reference dust sample for participating laboratories.
