USDA Report on Module Averaging - 1991

Mary Helen Forrester

ABSTRACT

In response to a recommendation made by the Secretary of Agriculture's Advisory Committee on Cotton Marketing, a pilot project on module averaging was conducted in 1991. Data for 1,041,588 bales were collected and analyzed as part of this pilot project. The average range of strength measurements between bales was 3.71 grams per tex within modules and 3.04 grams per tex within trailers. The within module and within trailer standard deviations were 1.17 and 1.19, respectively.

Sustainment data were collected from checklots for 10,960 modules and trailers. When the module or trailer average was used as the strength value for a bale, sustainment increased from 55 percent to 71 percent, indicating an improvement in the reproducibility of High Volume Instrument strength measurements.
