Summary of Small Plot Efficacy Evaluations for Thrips Control in Mississippi

J.T. Reed and C.S. Jackson

ABSTRACT

Twenty efficacy trials emphasizing in-furrow insecticide applications for evaluation of control of thrips on seedling cotton in 4 Mississippi locations are summarized. Numbers of thrips in untreated plots peaked during weeks 3-4 after planting and then declined. The order of performance of application methods rated by mean percent control was: in-furrow > foliar > seed treatment. Based on percent control, acephate tended to degrade somewhat more rapidly than did aldicarb or phorate. Species identified from 6 trials were primarily Frankliniella occidentalis (ca.93%), F. tritici, F. fusca and Sericothrips variabilis. Percent control of S. variabilis tended to be negative in plots treated with acephate, aldicarb or phorate.
