Management of Sweetpotato Whitefly in the Lower Rio Grande Valley

A.N. Sparks, Jr., J.W. Norman, Jr., and D.G. Riley

ABSTRACT

The sweetpotato whitefly (SPW), Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), emerged as a major pest of cotton and vegetables in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) of Texas in 1990. The broad impact of SPW on Valley agriculture and the involvement of numerous agencies and interest groups in addressing this problem resulted in the formation of the Rio Grande Valley (RGV)-SPW task force. One of the objectives of the task force was to develop strategies for management of SPW. The suggested management practices are discussed.
