A brief review is given of the nomenclature, morphological identification characters, and life cycle of the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover. Original research is also given on the temporal sequence of aphid species in cotton, which may help in the identification process, and of non-cultivated host plant species from which the cotton aphid was collected in the Mid South.
