The Pros and Cons of Nodule Averaging: One Gin's Experience

Michael Hooper

ABSTRACT

We at Farmers Cooperative Gin, Inc. agreed to participate in the 1991-92 season module averaging pilot program. However, I feel that our motivation for doing so may have been slightly different from that of other participants in the program. We averaged our roller ginned Upland cotton with a specific objective in mind, that being to "smooth out" the admittedly precise staple measurement which the advent of HVI has allowed us.

It is certainly not the objective of this paper to once again argue the merits or disadvantages of HVI. It is rather to pass along my experience with module averaging as it relates to the new reality that HVI has created. Specifically, I can't help but feel that it is difficult to correctly evaluate the quality characteristics of 500 pounds of cotton, based on a fine tuft of lint taken from a bale. As quality becomes an ever increasing factor in the days and years to come, it is my thought that a few of you on the supply side of our industry may, if you haven't already, identify with the scenario to follow.
