Cotton Production and Marketing in China

Ronald R. Roberson and Priscilla Andrew

ABSTRACT

China is the largest cotton producer in the world, with cotton occupying a crucial position in its national economy and the basic means of livelihood for many Chinese. Varieties and inputs have changed but cotton farming techniques remain very labor intensive compared with U.S. techniques. There is no free market for cotton in China, and the farmer can sell cotton only to the State.
