Narrow Row Cotton: Why Many Farmers Are Making the Switch in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas

Merritt J. Taylor and William T. Roach

ABSTRACT

Results of a survey of South Texas Cotton Farmers indicated that variable production costs were not different between narrow row (30 inch) versus conventional row (40 inch) spacings. Additional fixed costs associated with machinery conversion were exceeded by increased yields and revenue from planting in the 30 inch configuration by $17.00 per acre for the 1991 crop year.
