Market Potential of Organically Grown Cotton as a Niche Crop

Julia Kveton Apodaca

ABSTRACT

Organically grown cotton has appeared as a small, new niche in the international cotton market. Market research by several companies indicates that consumer interest in organic cotton products is increasing, mainly due to consumers' concern about the potentially detrimental effects of cotton production and processing on the environment. The major shift in values among the general public brought about by education and awareness of environmental issues makes it likely that this niche will remain firmly entrenched, though relatively small, in the future.
