Herbicide Injury to Cotton

John R. Abernathy and Allen F. Wiese

ABSTRACT

Herbicides continue to be the most effective and efficient method of controlling weeds in cotton (Gossypium spp.) and when used properly and according to the label are normally safe. However there are examples where a combination of adverse circumstances have resulted in serious cotton injury.

Stunting, necrosis, chlorosis, and malformation are the major herbicide symptoms in cotton. Cotton injury from herbicides may occur from herbicides used for weed control in the crop and from accidental drift or soil residue of herbicides used on other adjacent or rotational crops.
