End of Season Management for Maximum Quality

William Mayfield

ABSTRACT

Major changes are underway in the cotton industry because the commitment has been made to develop and adopt a more accurate instrument quality evaluation system. This will allow a marketing system to develop which will reward producers for delivering cotton with fiber properties which textile manufacturers need to make the highest quality, highest valued products. Accurate quality data will detect production Mistakes and fiber quality damaged during ginning. Since all fiber cleaning machines do some damage to quality, the only way to preserve the maximum genetic fiber quality is to keep trash from getting mixed with the cotton. Thus, expert management of defoliation, harvesting, seed cotton storage and ginning will become more important in the next decade.
