Harvade 5F: A New Cotton Defoliant and Plant Growth Regulant

A.R. Hegman

ABSTRACT

Harvade® is the registered tradename for Uniroyal Chemical's newly registered harvest aid chemical whose approved common name is dimethipin. Harvade is a unique plant growth regulator derived from a new area of chemistry discovered in Uniroyal's Canadian laboratories.

Harvade was identified as a possible defoliant and was extensively tested in small plot research trials and large grower trials to better define Harvade as a cotton defoliant. In 1982, Harvade received full registration status in time for the cotton defoliation season.

Harvade is truly a plant growth regulant not only defoliating the cotton plant but accelerating the natural maturing processes. This phenomenon has been noted by company personnel as well as cotton growers. Cotton growers have reported picking more cotton the first time through in fields treated with Harvade in comparison to those fields treated with a standard organophosphate defoliant. Uniroyal is actively investigating the boll opening properties of Harvade.
