Survey of Cotton Gin Trash Disposal Practices and Preferences in the Midsouth

ABSTRACT

Cotton ginners in the Midsouth need viable alternatives to incineration for cotton gin trash disposal. In the Midsouth alone, over 250,000 tons of cotton gin trash are generated each year. A survey of gins in the region revealed that most ginners spread raw gin trash on farm land, but that approximately one-fourth of the gin trash is currently incinerated. The mean reported disposal expense per bale of ginned lint was $0.80. Ginners showed interest in composting and spreading, and some interest in contract hauling and dumping. About 60% of ginners hauled their gin trash for disposal, and over 92% of those hauled the material five miles or less. Most ginners were not interested in storing gin trash for disposal after the ginning season.
