Cotton Weed Control with DPX-PE350 "A Southern Perspective"

W.H. Mitchell

ABSTRACT

DPX-PE350 represents a new family of chemistry which inhibits the enzyme acetolactate synthase. It is not a sulfonylurea or imidazolinone. DPX-PE350 is a highly active cotton herbicide candidate characterized by low use rates with a rate range of 0.8 to 2.0 ounces active per acre. Preliminary rat studies indicate that DPX-PE350 has low acute and dermal toxicity. This herbicide candidate has demonstrated excellent cotton safety when applied postemergence and good cotton safety preemergence. Cotton tolerance when applied preplant incorporated may be marginal. DPX-PE350 is rapidly taken up by both roots and foliage and acts to inhibit cell division and growth in susceptible plants. Death generally occurs slowly, often taking 7-14 days. In certain instances death may not occur. Plants may remain in a dwarfed or stunted condition.

Postemergence applications of DPX-PE350 within the rate range of 0.8 to 2.0 ounces active per acre resulted in good/excellent activity on entireleaf morningglory, ivyleaf morningglory, pitted morningglory, cocklebur, prickly sida, smooth pigweed, and velvetleaf. Sicklepod control was poor to fair.

Preemergence treatments demonstrated good/excellent activity on entireleaf morningglory, ivyleaf morningglory, prickly sida, smooth pigweed, and velvetleaf. Fair/good activity on pitted morningglory and sicklepod. Control of cocklebur was poor.

Preplant incorporated treatments resulted in good control of prickley sida and smooth pigweed. Fair to good control of velvetleaf and sicklepod and poor to fair control of entireleaf morningglory, ivyleaf morningglory, pitted morningglory, and cocklebur.
