PIC-EM: A Decision Support System for Insecticide Selection

R.O. Bowden, R.G. Luttrell, and W.S. Shin

ABSTRACT

While developing the Cotton Insect Consultant for Expert Management (CIC-EM), a rule-based expert system for determining the timing of insecticide applications, a need was discovered for a decision support system to aid producers in selecting the most appropriate insecticide(s) based on multiple pests and multiple management criteria (efficacy, material cost, resistance, environment, etc.). Therefore, a prototype decision support system called the Pesticide information Consultant for Expert Management (PIC-EM), was developed. PIC-EM uses expert knowledge, user's management objectives, and insecticide data (both performance and hazard indices) to deliver insecticide recommendations. PIC-EM is based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The AHP and initial results of the PIC-EM prototype are discussed.
