A Review of Cotton Gin Trash Disposal and Utilization

J. Alex Thomasson

ABSTRACT

Cotton gins generate large quantities of waste material, called cotton gin trash. Because of environmental concerns, incineration has become a less acceptable method of disposal. The problem of disposing of this material by some other means is a costly problem for many gins. This paper is an exhaustive review of literature on the disposal of cotton gin trash. Common methods if disposal, incineration, spreading on soil, and feeding to livestock, are discussed. Research in these areas and other innovative approaches including composting, pyrolysis, and chemical production are covered. Recommendations for current practices by gins are given. The need for further research and promising areas of interest are presented.
