Multiple Applications of Pix and Boll Set

Russell W. Hayes, Johnie N. Jenkins, and Charles E. Snipes

ABSTRACT

Beginning at match head square, mepiquat chloride (Pix®) was applied four times at ten day intervals using three rates (0, 2, and 4 oz/acre) to cultivars DES 119 and Deltapine 50 (DPL 50), at Mississippi State, MS, and Stoneville, MS. At the Stoneville location, the 2 and 4 oz rates of Pix increased yield from bolls at position two for DES 119 and at position one for DPL 50 and increased earliness by 3 to 6 days for both cultivars. At Mississippi State, Pix did not have an effect on yield for either cultivar, but increased earliness by 3 to 6 days for DES 119. Height, number of nodes and lint percent were lower in Pix treated plots while boll size was increased in response to Pix.
