Cottonseed Characteristics and Seed-Coat-Fragment Contamination

J.D. Bargeron

ABSTRACT

Cottonseed-fragment contamination can cause the production of second quality fabric. There are several characteristics of cottonseed that are related to seedcoat-fragment imperfections in fabric. However, 53 percent of the variation in seed-coat-fragment imperfections for six cottons grown in the San Joaquin Valley could be explained by a combination of the percent delinted seed that floated and the minor diameter of the seed. Malformed seed appear to be the major source of seed-coat-fragment contamination.
