ABSTRACT
The plant hormones IAA and ABA appear to have important regulatory roles in the initial cell elongation phase of cotton fiber development. These compounds have also been implicated in the regulation of later fiber development, when the cellulosic cell wall is synthesized and final fiber length is determined. To assess the involvement of IAA and ABA in the later stages of fiber development, the endogenous levels of these hormones needed to be established in order to develop hypotheses concerning the extent of hormonal regulation. In this report, preliminary data concerning the free IAA levels in the ovule/embryo and fibers of G. barbadense, Sea Island, from 15 to 40 days post-anthesis, as measured by GC-SIM-MS.
