Availability and Use of Cottonseed Market News in Louisiana

J.F. Hudson and S.S. Kelly

ABSTRACT

Most producers do not know about the sources of cottonseed market news available to them. They currently depend upon the ginner as their main source of price information. Producers were interested in local newspapers reporting more market information for their areas. Much of this information is currently available in the "Cottonseed Review". The study indicated a lack of concern on the part of cotton producers in regard to cottonseed market news and the need for an educational program in this area.

Very few ginners indicated having access to cottonseed market news. Most ginners depended upon the cottonseed oil mills for their cottonseed price information and did not feel they needed additional information because of the nature of the cottonseed industry. the primary cause of the increased amount of visible foreign material. Lint cleaning was able to remove a larger percentage of the foreign material from Lubbock Dwarf than from Pilose. This reduced foreign matter removal from the Pilose isoline suggested that lint cleaning is less effective on plant hairs than on leaf trash.

Fine dust content was estimated for each entry with the Cotton Dust Analyzer. Plant pubescence appeard to have no effect on the amount of fine dust. The Pilose and Smooth isolines had the same amount as TM-1. The closed boll strain had the least amount of fine dust. This small amount of fine dust from the closed boll strain suggested that this strain may be useful in reducing the amount of fine dust contained in cotton delivered to the mills.
