Command-Insecticide Interactions on Cotton

ABSTRACT

Experiments were conducted to determine the response of weed-free cotton to preplant incorporated application of Command. In Experiment I, Command was applied at 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 lb ai/A in combination with infurrow application of 0.75 lb ai/A of Disyston, Temik, Nemacur, and Thimet or two early postemergence applications of 0.13 lb ai/A of Cygon. Moderate to severe cotton injury and stand reductions were noted with the higher two rates of Command in combination with Cygon, Nemacur, or Temik. Only minor injury was noted with Command plus Disyston or Thimet. Even with substantial early-season crop injury and stand reduction, the highest yields were produced with Command plus Temik.

Experiment II compared cotton tolerance to 0.5 and 1.0 lb/A Command in combination with 0.5 lb/A Temik infurrow or Thimet in-furrow at Command:Thimet ratios of 2:1, 1:1, or 1:2. No differences among the Command:Thimet ratios were noted for crop injury, cotton stands, or yield. Crop injury was moderate to severe with Command plus Temik while only minor injury was noted with Command plus Thimet. However, cotton yield with Command plus Temik was similar to that with Command plus Thimet.

Experiment III was conducted to compare the response of eight cultivars to 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 lb/A of Command. Cultivars included Coker 304, Coker 320, Deltapine 20, Deltapine 90, McNair 235, KC 380, Stoneville 825, and DES 119. Thimet at 1.0 lb/A was applied in-furrow to all plots. As compared to Treflan, only minor crop injury was noted with any cultivar receiving Command, and a cultivar by Command interaction was not noted. Averaged over cultivars, cotton yield was similar with Treflan and Command.
