IPM A Greater Challenge in the 1990's

J.R. Phillips

ABSTRACT

My greatest concern when agreeing to speak on this subject was that I would be wasting your time. So at the outset I wish to say thank you for even being present and I will understand if you choose not to listen.

I have no intentions of outlining research and extension needs for the 1990's regarding IPM. There isn't anyone in this room that doesn't know more about these than I. What I wish to do actually is share with you some of the areas that I consider to be important, maybe critical, not only for cotton entomologists, but for the entire cotton research effort and associated administrative support personnel to address. We have no alternative but to meet the present challenge to provide for our producers a cotton production system that is competitive on an international basis, therefore allowing them to capture a greater share of the market. Furthermore, I am hopeful that we can provide for a better quality fiber providing for a market stimulation for a greater demand for the cotton fabric. I am sure that you are aware of a projected decline in the demand for denim for some uses as a result of fickle fashion demands.
