ABSTRACT

CALEX/Cotton, an integrated expert decision support system, is being developed for San Joaquin Valley cotton. Its development has occurred over a period of four years during which the implementation strategies have been a high priority. These strategies have taken into consideration the evolving complexity of the program, the needs of the user, differing levels of computer skills, and practical problems in delivering new technology. In the initial phases of implementation, technical support and user critique have been a high priority. As the program evolved into a stable prototype, support for data collection methods, calibration of sample methodology, and traditional extension educational outreach became more important. Long term support for the users and maintenance of the program are problems to be addressed. Evaluation of the level of acceptance by the industry and of industry attitudes about the value of the program is on-going.
