Orthene 90s (Acephate) a New Labeled In-Furrow Application

M.R. Bates and W.D. Sewell

ABSTRACT

In 1989, Orthene 90S cotton insecticide was granted 24(c) label registrations in Louisiana and Mississippi for use as an at-plant in-furrow liquid application in cotton. Orthene 90S is applied at 0.5 to 1.0 lbs. active in 3 to 5 gallons of water per furrow acre (13,068 linear feet of row). Flat fan nozzles are recommended and set so that the fanned spray pattern is aligned with the row to insure good spray deposition in the seed furrow.

In-furrow applications have afforded excellent early season control of thrips and aphids. In addition, infurrow applications have been observed by researchers to have had some affects on the developing cotton plant. These effects have been measured in comparison to an untreated check and to the commercial standard of Temik. Some of these early season affects include increased plant height, increased number on squares per plant, and increased percent square set. Late season observations have shown that ratio of boll production to sites on the plant where squares initiated was higher and that the percent open bolls was also higher when compared to Temik. However, no statistical differences were observed between any of the treatments.
