Cost of Production of Irrigated Cotton in the US and Competing Countries

Kees Verbeek

ABSTRACT

With increasing world supplies and uncertain prospects for world cotton consumption, competition in the world export markets will remain strong. New data on cost of production released by the International Cotton Advisory Committee permit a comparison between US-irrigated cotton and competitors like Australia and Israel. A breakdown is made in costs by categories including water, inputs and equipment. The impact of changes in the exchange rates on total costs of production is analyzed.
