General Economy Outlook

R.M. Monaco

ABSTRACT

Despite serious potential problems, the economy performed well in the last year. Export growth led to higher levels of capacity use and production, which sparked business spending on plant and equipment. Employment growth was strong, especially in manufacturing. These positive developments set the stage for the expansion to continue in 1989, albeit at a slower pace than in 1988. Two benefits of slightly slower growth could be a lower inflation rate and less upward pressure on interest rates.
