Bolstar: its Current Status in Cotton Insect Control and Pyrethroid Resistance Management

J.W. Mullins, A.D. Cohick, and D.E. Simonet

ABSTRACT

Bolstar, an organophosphate insecticide from Mobay Corporation, was introduced into the cotton market in 1976. Although it is highly effective for control of Lepidopteran pests in cotton, it has not been widely used since the registration of pyrethroid insecticides which are also highly effective but at a lower cost. Recently, the treat of pyrethroid resistance in Heliothis virescens and the increasing incidence of armyworms, aphids and other secondary pests in cotton have generated renewed interest in Bolstar. The utilization of Bolstar in current cotton insect control strategies and pyrethroid resistance management will be discussed.
