A Large Area Sterile Boll Weevil Release Experiment in Western Alabama

James W. Smith, Eric J. Villavaso, and W. L. McGovern

ABSTRACT

A two-year large scale release experiment was carried out in western Alabama to evaluate releasing laboratory-reared sterile boll weevils as a suppression technique. The test involved aerial releases of ca 300 sterile weevils/acre for 10 weeks during mid season in 1987 and 1988. Results were encouraging, especially during the 1988 test period, in showing that most cotton fields within the test area remained below threshold level during the release periods.
