ABSTRACT

The PEG-US Pyrethroid Resistance Monitoring Program that was begun in 1987 was continued and enlarged in 1988. In 1988 the cooperative monitoring efforts between PEG-US and non-industry researchers were increased and improved. This resulted in an unprecedented compilation of Heliathis virescens susceptibility data. The number of Adult Vial Tests were increased 240% with approximately 60,000 moths being tested. In addition, the quality of the data generated as well as the number and location of monitoring sites were also substantially improved. Data from these tests and from laboratory tests conducted by FMC, ICI, and DuPont showed the least susceptible populations tend to be located in TX, AZ, and CA but some increase in tolerance was observed in areas of northern LA. In most areas no significant changes in susceptibility were observed this year. The general pattern observed was good susceptibility in May, an increase in tolerance after early July, followed by increasing susceptibility in late season. Monitoring efforts will continue in 1989 with research efforts being focused on relating bioassay results to field efficacy of the pyrethroid products.
