Deep Tillage for Cotton in Coastal Plain Soils - Costs/Returns

T.H. Garner, A. Khalilian, and M.J. Sullivan

ABSTRACT

This paper is concerned with under-the-row subsoiling in coastal plain soils. This form of primary tillage permits plant roots to penetrate into the B-soil horizon without being stopped by traffic pans. The results of a three year study on depth of subsoiling for cotton are summarized. An analysis to determine the size power unit needed to pull subsoilers at different depths is presented. Brief cost data for different tractors are given.
