Review of Computer Models for Cotton Ginning

W.S. Anthony and G.L. Barker

ABSTRACT

Several computer simulation models of cotton ginning systems are available to predict the effect of various machine operating characteristics on cotton quality. One model is designed to predict the quality of spindle-harvested cotton after various machine processes while another performs similar tasks for with reference measurements on typical ginning systems. These models are written in BASIC language for execution with microcomputers. A dynamic simulation model which generates decision matrices as a function of fiber moisture, cotton color, foreign matter content and market price structure has been developed in FORTRAN language. The model has also been incorporated with appropriate sensors and electrical hardware and installed in a gin process control system to maximize monetary returns and minimize fiber damage. The computerized process control system for cotton gins offers considerable promise for quality preservation and increased profits.
