Bacterial Blight Resistance Screen of Gossypium barbadense L. Germplasm and the Day-Neutral Conversion Status of Eight Resistant Accessions

Richard G. Percy and E. L. Turootte

ABSTRACT

A systematic search was made of the USDA-ARS Gossypium barbadense L. germplasm collection for new sources of resistance to bacterial blight. Two hundred accessions representing 21 countries and 8 geographical regions of the G. barbadense range were screened using races 1,2,7, and is of the pathogen. Eight accessions were found to possess some degree of resistance. The eight resistant accessions are presently undergoing conversion from short-day to day-neutral flowering habit. Fiber descriptors of the eight accessions reflect their primitive status with the exception of lint percentage. Four of the eight accessions possess commercially acceptable lint percentages.
