The Association of Enterobacter Agglomerans and Pseudomonas Syringae with Cotton Lint

Janet J. Fischer and Karin Foarde

ABSTRACT

The cotton lint exposed as the boll opens is not associated with any microorganisms. Subsequently, a rich flora of microorganisms populates the cotton plant. Studies have identified Enterobacter agglomerans as a major constituent of this flora. Data will be presented to show the relation of this organism to the cotton lint in various cotton growing areas throughout the cotton growing season and in stored lints and bracts. Also, experiments on cotton as a nutrient for this organism, and attempts to add and remove this organism from cotton will be included.
