Counter Systemic Insecticide-Nematicide Use in Cotton

R.A. Farlow and G.R. Zummo

ABSTRACT

COUNTER Systemic Insecticide-Nematicide (terbufos) applied at planting as an in-furrow treatment has shown excellent activity on early season insect pests and nematodes in cotton. Field trial data indicate that COUNTER used at 0.5 to 2.0 lbs ai/a provides control of thrips, aphids, spider mites and root knot, lance, and reniform nematodes. American Cyanamid is pursuing full registration of COUNTER on cotton for possible use in the 1988 growing season.

COUNTER systemic insecticide - nematicide is the registered trademark of American Cyanamid for the active ingredient terbufos. COUNTER has previously provided corn, grain sorghum, and sugarbeet producers effective control of insects and nematodes in their respective crops for several years. COUNTER is now in the final stages of reregistration. Additional labelling for usage on cotton and other crops is pending.

Research trials conducted across the cotton belt with COUNTER since 1979 have shown it to be an effective chemical tool in managing early season insect and nematode pests in cotton. The list of pests include: tobacco thrips, (Franklinella fusca); flower thrips, (Franklinella tritici); soy bean thrips, (Sericothrips variabilis); cotton aphid, (Aphis gossypi); as well as other Aphis sp.; carmine mite, (Tetranychus cinnarbarinus); two-spotted mite, (Tetranchus urticae); root knot nematode, (Meloidogyne sp.); lance nematode, (Hoplolaima sp.); and reniform nematode, (Rotylenchus sp.).

Today, I would like to present data that has been generated with COUNTER applied in-furrow in cotton during 1986 and 1987. Control of thrips with COUNTER @ 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 lbs ai/a in Mississippi during 1986 was comparable to THIMET @ 0.75 lb ai/a and Temik @ 0.4 lb ai/a at 18, 23, and 25 days after planting, (DAP). See Table 1. Thrip populations were reduced to satisfactory levels for the evaluation period. Levels of significance, designated by letters, may vary as certain treatments, e.g., Counter and standard treatments were selected for presentation from tests including many more treatments.
