Utilization of Fiber Strength Measurements in the Development of High Fiber Strength Cottons

C.C. Green and T.W. Culp

ABSTRACT

Data from several populations have been compiled to compare HVI and stelometer strength measurements with the objective of determining the usefulness of such measurements to a cotton breeding program. Neither stelometer strength nor HVI strength is consistently better correlated with yarn strength over all populations. In addition, HVI strength and stelometer are only moderately correlated across all three populations. This suggests that HVI strength and stelometer strength may not be measuring the same genetic properties.
