Cotton Gin Operating Costs: A Simplified Approach

William D. Mayfield

ABSTRACT

This study uses survey data for several variable cost factors combined with traditional treatment of fixed cost factors to estimate the total cost of ginning cotton for a wide range of initial investments and annual volumes. Annual ginning volume has a large effect on per bale ginning costs, regardless of the initial investment or the capacity of the gin. Gins operated 900 hours per year or more should experience reasonable total costs.
