Documentation of Uncontrolled Weeds in Central Alabama Cotton

Mike Patterson

ABSTRACT

Cotton fields were surveyed in three central Alabama counties just prior to harvest in 1987. Only mature weeds were counted. Fields on four randomly selected farms were surveyed in each county. Weeds were counted by species in 2 square meter areas at 20 stops in fields on each farm. Weed counts were converted to a 100 m2 basis for reporting purposes.

Common bermudagrass and nutsedge species were the most prevalent weeds observed in this survey. Nutsedge counts were much greater here than observed in the 1986 survey of three north Alabama counties. Prickly sida counts were considerably lower here than in last years' survey. Velvetleaf, spurred anoda, spotted spurge, and johnsongrass were not found in these counties, but were prevalent in north Alabama cotton fields.
