Experimental Herbicides for Morningglory Control in Cotton

R.S. Baker

ABSTRACT

BAS-514 at 0.05 to 0.15 lb ai/A preemergence gave good to excellent morningglory control at the high rate but cotton injury was unacceptable. Directed postemergence treatments at 0.25 and 0.5 lb ai/A gave excessive cotton injury. RE-40885 at 0.5 to 0.75 lb ai/A preemergence resulted in temporary cotton chlorosis and the morningglory control seldom equalled that of Cotoran®. RE-40885 directed postemergence at 0.25 to 0.5 lb ai/A was generally inferior to Bladex®. SC-0504 at 0.2 to 0.375 lb ai/A preemergence did not give adequate weed control, but when mixed with Cotoran gave equal or better control than Cotoran + Dualt. UBI-9047 at 0.06 to 0.12 lb ai/A directed postemergence severely injured three inch cotton, but gave excellent morningglory control where good spray coverage of the foliage occurred. Of the four herbicides evaluated, the ones most promising were SC-0504 and UBI-9047. SC-0504 showed excellent selectivity on cotton, but required the addition of another herbicide for adequate control of grasses, spurges, and prickly sida. UBI-9047 lacked selectivity but showed excellent foliar activity on morningglory.
