1987 Herbicide Use in Cotton Production

Herman W. Delvo

ABSTRACT

Herbicides were applied to 94 percent of the cotton acreage in the 6 major-producing States in 1987. On average 3.5 herbicide treatments were made in the Delta States compared with 1.3 in Texas and the West. Trifluralin was the most commonly used material followed by pendimethalin and fluometuron. Preplant applications accounted for 38 percent of the acre-treatments and postemergence treatments 32 percent. Banded or directed-spray herbicide treatments were used for 54 percent of the acre-treatments and broadcast treatments 41 percent. Ground equipment accounted for 96 percent of the acre-treatments. Farmers applied most of the herbicides--91 percent of the acre-treatments.
