Sterile Boll Weevil Releases as Part of a Boll Weevil Eradication Program

James W. Smith, Eric J. Villavaso, and James R. Brazzel

ABSTRACT

Releasing laboratory reared sterile boll weevils is a suppression technique developed by ARS and needed by APHIS in its eradication effort. During 1987 a cooperative test using sterile boll weevils was conducted by ARS and APHIS. Results were encouraging and plans are to continue the test on approximately 4,500 acres in Western Alabama. Results of the 1987 test and plans for next year are reviewed.
