Southeast Boll Weevil Eradication Program

F.R. Planer

ABSTRACT

A review of the progress and accomplishments of boll weevil eradication programs initiated in the southeast cotton production area since 1978.

The key elements of a boll weevil eradication program are: (1) mandatory participation of all cotton producers made possible through State legislation, (2) intensive use of program technology on a select basis involving pesticides, traps, and pheromone, and (3) a high degree of cooperation between State and Federal agencies and the cotton industry. The application of program technology is designed to prevent diapause, prevent reproduction, and to suppress reproducing populations during the growing season.
