ABSTRACT

An assessment of available technology for use of sex pheromones in monitoring populations of Heliothis zea and H. virescens indicates that considerable progress has been made. Hercon® laminate and black molded polyvinyl chloride dispensers have been identified as effective substrates for sex pheromone components of H. Zea and H. virescens, respectively, and preliminary specifications have been developed for these dispensers. The wire cone trap has been identified as an effective trap design, but the Universal Moth Trap may also be useful. Actual or potential uses of sex pheromone traps are In sampling, detection, monitoring, and prediction. Development of a reliable system using pheromone traps to determine species composition and/or the number of each species of Heliothis in individual fields is identified as an attainable objective. An understanding of the factors influencing trap efficiency and performance, and variation in trap captures, as well as the availability of techniques to determine relative adult moth densities and their activity are critical to accomplishing this objective.
