Equipment for Chiseling Non-Traffic Middles

Gordon R. Tupper

ABSTRACT

Primary tillage tools, such as subsoilers and chisels, were designed for use in shattering compacted soil layers to improve water infiltration and root penetration. Subsoilers are generally used in the fall or early spring. Compaction begins to reoccur with the first rainfall and with each subsequent field operation after subsoiling. A parabolic chisel was designed and built at Stoneville to chisel the alternate non-traffic middles after rows are hipped, or after cotton stand establishment. Results from 10 studies chiseling alternate non-traffic middles following subsoiling significantly increased seed cotton yields by 124 lb/A.
