Arturo Hernandez-Jasso and Fermin Hernandez-Marquez

ABSTRACT

Ciano Yaquimi-86 (YB6) and Ciano Cubachi-86 (C86) released recently at the Valle del Yaqui Experiment Station (VYES), represent the effort of Mexican public breeders to fulfill the need for improved better yielding and early varieties for the Northwest and other Mexican producing areas. These two new varieties were tested at the VYES from 1983-1985, where they outyielded the commercial check Deltapine 80 (D80) by 16 and 6%, respectively. In trials carried out from 1984-1986 in eight important producing regions of Mexico, they outyielded D80 by 3 and 4%, respectively. In 1986 they were validated in six commercial fields, where they produced 14 and 6% more lint yield, respectively, than D80. On the other hand, Y86 Produced 44% more seedcotton at first pick. C86 has a higher gin turnout and is more storm tolerant that D80. Fiber characteristics for both varieties is similar to D80.
