A decline in photosynthesis as leaves age is a widely reported phenomenon, but the underlying causes of the decline are not known. This paper reviews our current understanding of this complex problem. Decreasing light intensity in the lower regions of the canopy is not solely responsible, and other factors interact with light intensity. The possible involvement of water stress, nutrient status and endogenous plant growth substances is discussed and summarized. |
