Effect of Row Pattern on Cotton Flower Visitation by Bumble Bees

J.B. Weaver, Jr.

ABSTRACT

Adequate transfer of pollen by bees from Pima type restorer strains to the stigma of cytoplasmic male sterile (A lines) of upland is a problem that could interfer with the commercial development of interspecific hybrid cotton. Weaver (1982) reported that A lines of upland set fewer seed per boll when Pima cotton is the pollinator parent than when upland cotton is the pollinator parent. Individual bumble bees were reported to visit mainly only one genotype when cotton was planted in a 2 x 1 skip row pattern with the two planted rows being the same genotype.
