New Approaches to Measuring Seed Cotton Moisture Content

ABSTRACT

Two electronic moisture meters have been shown to provide seed cotton moisture measurements of acceptable accuracy. A hand-held forage meter has been recalibrated for seed cotton and shown to work well if good sampling procedures are followed and a sufficient number of readings are taken. An automated meter mounted directly on a module maker and specifically designed for seed cotton has also been developed and successfully tested. The calibration curves for both meters tend to vary with the conditions of the cotton being tested. Laboratory tests have shown the cause of most of this variation to be due to changes in the distribution of moisture between seed and lint.
