Effects of Starter Fertilizer on Cotton Yield

Eddie R. Funderburg

ABSTRACT

Liquid 10-34-0 was applied to cotton in a 2-3 inch band at a rate of 150 pounds/acre on top of the ground immediately behind the press wheel of the planter. The test was replicated in 3 locations in Mississippi. The average yield increase was 134 pounds lint cotton per acre, with the greatest yield increase occurring where soil test P was medium, although significant yield increases occurred where soil test P was high. The starter fertilizer treatment also increased square load, boll load, and hastened maturity by more than one week.
