Estimating the Potential for Vegetable Production on Cotton Farms in Louisiana

John F. Denison and Kenneth W. Paxton

ABSTRACT

Cotton farmers are constantly searching for ways to improve the profit potential of their farming operation. One of the alternatives being considered by some farmers in Louisiana is vegetable production. This paper examines the potential for vegetable production an a typical cotton farm in Louisiana. Linear programming is used to first determine an optimum crop mix not including vegetables. Selected vegetable enterprises are then entered into the model to determine to what extent vegetables might be a supplementary enterprise on a commercial cotton farm. Results of the analysis indicated some potential for vegetable crops under the assumptions used in the model.
